Did you go out in your pyjamas to raise money for Children in Need today?

The first ever BBC appeal for children was a radio broadcast in 1927 on Christmas Day and it raised £1,143 18s 3d.

The ‘Children’s Hour Christmas Appeal’ made its TV debut in 1955 presented by Harry Corbett and the iconic puppet Sooty, famous for his magic tricks and catchphrase “Izzy Wizzy, Let’s Get Busy! ” The Christmas Day Appeals continued on TV and radio right up until 1979, raising a total of £625,836.

In 1980 the show moved to an innovative telethon format on BBC One, hosted by Terry Wogan with Sue Lawley and Esther Rantzen. For the first time they broke the million pound mark.

Pudsey was introduced as the new mascot in 1985 and the cuddly yellow bear has been going ever since.

So far the appeal has raised over £650 million to help children in need. Isn’t that a fantastic result! And I’m sure it will be even more spectacular after all the generous donations tonight…
